This is a busy time of year for Alaskans, and I am no exception. Despite 24 hours of daylight each day, the weeks come and go very quickly. So this week, I am trying to take care of writing my column early as I know how hard it is to do at the last minute when there are so many other spring and summer Alaska activities to pull me outdoors and away from the things we want to procrastinate.

Spring and summer are the time for many Alaskans to start working on all the projects they have been putting off for a while. For some, it’s getting their gear ready for commercial and subsistence fishing, or taking flying lessons during the long days of good weather, and for others, it’s building a shed or painting the house or preparing for a marathon.

We all have so much to do and we must do our best to focus in on the items that seem easy to put off for another time because there is something more exciting to do right now. Publishing a paper is a weekly cycle of this process. The deadline is always approaching each week. The stories need to be written, the photos selected, the ads completed and the layout of the final product ready for the printer. This process has taught me that for a newspaper, you can’t procrastinate or you just get left behind or left out.

I attempted to submit a column for last week’s paper and waited until late Tuesday night to even begin writing it. When I finally thought I had some time to get it done, my editor informed me it was too late so no publisher’s column. Lesson learned.

We all have very important tasks we like to put off in exchange for doing something more fun or something we have been waiting all year to do. But what we might be putting off for something more fun may be making more work for someone else, thus robbing them of their free time as well.

Or we may be putting off something we need to be properly prepared so we can’t really go enjoy that long awaited sun because we aren’t prepared for it. So the next time you think of playing in that long awaited sun before completing the tasks you know you have to do try to reprioritize and just get the tough job done first and then you’ll have more time to go play and maybe be better prepared for it.
